Dr. John K. Murphy brings a unique and varied background to business. Dr. Murphy was raised in the hotel business, his father being the owner/operator of hotels in Ontario, Canada over some twenty years.
Dr. Murphy attended Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (major in Economics) in 1981. After operating one of his father’s hotels for two years, he entered St. Augustine’s Seminary in 1982 to study for the priesthood. Dr. Murphy graduated in 1987 with a Masters of Divinity from the University of Toronto and was ordained to the priesthood the same year.
After serving as a curate in a Toronto parish for two years, Dr. Murphy was sent by the Archbishop of Toronto to study canon law in Rome where he attended the Pontifical University of St. John Lateran and graduated with a licentiate in canon law in 1991. Dr. Murphy remained in Rome to pursue a doctoral degree and completed the required course work in 1992. While writing his doctoral dissertation he was called back to the Archdiocese in 1993 where he was appointed as Chancellor of Spiritual Affairs and Episcopal Vicar for Canonical Matters. In 1995 Dr. Murphy returned to Rome briefly to defend his doctoral dissertation and received a doctorate in canon law, summa cum laude. He served as lecturer of canon law at the Toronto School of Theology from 1994 to 2005.
As his responsibilities for the administration of the Archdiocese of Toronto grew, Dr. Murphy was appointed Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia in 1997. In 1999 he was named Prelate of Honour by His Holiness, Pope John Paul II. From 1993 until 2005, he served on various boards in the Toronto area including the Episcopal Board, St. Augustine’s Seminary, and Catholic Cemeteries. During this period he oversaw the establishment of several new parishes as the Archdiocese of Toronto grew in population and cultural diversity. Dr. Murphy appeared on television hundreds of times to offer spiritual reflections for Canadians nationwide.
After considerable soul-searching, Dr. Murphy left the active ministry in 2006 and commenced a career as an investment advisor with the RBC Dominion Securities. He was able to shelter his clients from the worse effects of the financial crisis that struck in 2008.
In 2010 Dr. Murphy was recruited by BMO Nesbitt Burns and focused on gathering investment assets from new Canadians who were eager to find security and prosperity in their portfolio. This experience proved to be invaluable and in 2013 he established his own investment consulting company, PHOS Consulting Inc.
Over the years, Dr. Murphy has garnered critical experience from various sectors of the global economy and come to understand how to navigate the relationships between the private sector and the public sector, the individual entrepreneur and the government.
